A small town on the River Creuse in central France, Aubusson (Albuconium in the Middle Ages) has been a weaving centre since mediaeval times. The town’s weavers first specialised in tapestries and fabrics, before extending their craft to carpet-making.
During the reign of Henry IV of Navarre, Aubusson’s textile factories came under the protection of the king, whose patronage led to the opening of the Louvre and Savonnerie factories. In 1601, he issued an edict banning the import of tapestries woven outside France, to protect local weavers.
This tapestry, made in the 19th century, depicts two young shepherds lying on the grass, in the shade of some large trees.
The scene is framed by a border of simple multi-coloured flowers.
