Defining the Art Deco style is an unusually difficult task because there will always be a degree of ambiguity between the works produced in this period and those exhibited at the “Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels”.
In fact, the name “Art Deco” is shorthand for “Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes (the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts) held in Paris in 1925. For this reason, the movement is sometimes also known as Style 1925. It flourished mainly during the period 1925 to 1940, and spanned decorative arts, visual arts, architecture and fashion.
Two schools of thought are discernible, however, with a clear distinction between them. The first draws upon traditional French elegance and is heir to a creative past, with exponents such as Gaudissard, Ruhlmann and Leleu. The second is more revolutionary, and is represented by the work of Léger, Lurcat and Delaunay.
This elegant example of an Art Deco carpet is of considerable size. Based on a palette comprising various shades of brown and beige, the two halves of the geometric design mirror each other in orderly symmetry.
