Paul Poiret – Paris 1879-1944

Atelier Martine was founded in Paris in the early 1900s by Paul Poiret.
Paul Poiret was a French couturier, who is now seen as the first fashion designer in the modern sense. His contribution to 20th-century fashion is considered comparable to Picasso’s contribution to 20th-century art.
The son of a fabric merchant, Poiret launched his career by selling his designs to some of the greatest fashion houses in Paris.
He founded his own fashion house in 1903, and stood out from other designers for his keen instinct for marketing. He was the first designer to publish his sketches for promotional purposes, and the first to organise fashion shows that toured Europe.
Maison Poiret quickly extended its range to interior design, furnishing complements and perfumes.
He named his perfume division Parfums de Rosine, after his first daughter. He then established a brand specialising in furniture, textiles and interior design objects, called Atelier Martine, after his second daughter.
A perfect reflection of the decorative tastes of the period, this carpet features bright colours and stylised floral motifs.
