Oriental carpet Heriz (Persia)

Period: 19th century
Dimensions: cm 343 x 419

Heriz carpets take their name from their region of origin in north-western Persia, which broadly corresponds to modern-day Iran, where the influence of neighbouring Anatolia is plain to see in carpet design and in the systematic use of symmetrical knots.
Carpet-makers in the Heriz region typically knotted large carpets with a very strong structure and either a central medallion or an all-over design, but always involving an extremely stylised and symmetrical floral pattern. Their colour palette is based on earth tones, such as brown in various shades, deep red, orange and the typical salmon-pink, which was originally obtained from rubia, a genus of flowering plants commonly known as madder.
